"On This Day" is a Wells College Athletics feature designed to look back over the past three seasons when most of our 2020 seniors began play for the Express and what highlights happened to Wells' spring teams on this day on April 13
Softball: April 13, 2019
The Wells College softball team honored its four seniors prior to a Saturday, April 13 doubleheader against College of Saint Elizabeth. Carley Ryan, Autumn McLain, Lizzie Monnat, and Ellie Schwoebel were recognized in the pre-game ceremony. It was a good day for Jenna Devora, who was the lone Wells player to record hits in both games as she finished the day with four hits and a pair of RBI as the Express dropped both games.
Saint Elizabeth 4, Wells 0
The Eagles scored one in the top of the first and held on to that one-run lead until the sixth where they scored a pair of insurance runs and added one more in the seventh. Wells was limited to two hits in the game, a fifth-inning single by Devora and a seventh-inning double by Naomi Kubo. Kubo pitched a good game for Wells in allowing four runs, one of which was earned, on 11 hits with six strikeouts.
Saint Elizabeth 10, Wells 2 (5 innings)
Wells scored in the bottom of the first on a two-out double by Devora to bring in Lizzie Monnat. The Eagles took control with a six-run third inning. Devora was 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in Monnat again in the fifth for the second Wells run. Monnat was on base via her first career triple. Autumn McLain and Tori Miller also had hits for Wells, while Kubo reached twice by base on balls. Conover took the loss from the circle with two strikeouts.
Men's Volleyball: April 13, 2019
The Wells College men's volleyball team swept SUNY Poly in three sets in a North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff semifinal match on Saturday, April 13 at Lancaster, Pa. Set scores were 25-15, 25-20 and 27-25 for the Express, who advance to Sunday's championship match versus Lancaster Bible College.
It is the third year in a row that Wells has advanced to the NEAC championship match, and the Express were runner-up to Penn State Altoona in 2017 and Lancaster Bible College in 2018. The host Chargers have won two regular-season matches against Wells, and they are ranked 10th in the latest AVCA Division III national poll.
In Saturday's semifinal victory, Wells hit efficiently, by serving 10 aces, and had a 37-29 advantage in digs.
Wells took the opening set when the Express slowly distanced themselves and built a 20-11 lead. The Express had 12 kills and six errors in the first set. In the second set, SUNY Poly held a 13-6 lead but Wells answered with a 15-2 run to take control. The Express closed it out 25-20 on a kill from Joe Zimmerman and a kill from Josh Undari. The third set was a see-saw battle that had SUNY Poly at match point at 24-23, but a service error followed by an attack error. The Wildcats defended one set point for Wells, but the Express closed it out with another service error from Poly and a kill by Robert Patzer. Wells hit .323 in the third on 15 kills and five errors, while Poly hit .343 with 16 kills and four errors.
Caden O'Loughlin, named First Team All-NEAC earlier this week, hit .267 with a team-high 11 kills. Zimmerman and Patzer had nine kills each. Undari had 32 assists. Wells served 10 aces, with three each from Zimmerman, Patzer, and Undari. Zimmerman had nine digs and O'Loughlin had eight digs with two block assists.
