"Awards Show Countdown": Women's Basketball

"Awards Show Countdown" is a Wells College Athletics feature that reviews a memorable moment from each team while counting down to showtime. With 9 days remaining until the virtual online Express Awards Show, let's take a look at a moment from the women's basketball team's 2019-20 season.

The Wells College women's basketball team finished its season strong after netting its best offensive fourth quarter of basketball as the season-end neared on Feb. 21 against visiting Penn State Berks.

What made this game memorable was the team's performance in the second half. The women's team finished the final quarter in its next-to-last game of the season with an 18-point fourth quarter that matched a fourth-quarter season high from Dec. 7 against another Penn State team – Harrisburg.

That 18-point fourth quarter production allowed Wells to outscore the Nittany Lions in the second half by six points. Four players accounted for that exciting fourth quarter offensive finish with Maritza Scharoun and Jordan Jacobs leading the way with a half-dozen points each in the final frame.

The Express attempted just a pair of shots from beyond the arc in the fourth with both hitting nothing but net and coming from Lorissa Parks and Sonia Rivera.

For the game, Jacobs finished with 14 points and Scharoun with 10 on the night, while they also co-led the team in boards with seven each.

Rivera finished with a half-dozen boards and eight points after a pair of second-half threes. Jacobs, Scharoun and Rivera each added a pair of assists, while Jacobs also led the team in steals with five and blocks with two. Rounding out the Wells College scoring was Parks with five points and Jennifer McCumber with three.
