"Awards Show Countdown": Men's Volleyball

"Awards Show Countdown" is a Wells College Athletics feature that reviews a memorable moment from each team while counting down to showtime. With 5 days remaining until the virtual online Express Awards Show, let's take a look at a moment from the men's volleyball team's 2019-20 season.

The Wells College men's volleyball team returned from its season-opening matches in California undefeated and continued its win streak with a sweep at the Cardinal Invite to move to 7-0 on the season on Jan. 18.

What made that January weekend memorable was the team's emergence into the national poll as a top-10 school at No. 7 after going 3-0 in Rochester and winning every set but one.

The Wells College men's volleyball team beat Johnson and Wales University by a 3-0 score to finish the two-day Cardinal Invite at 3-0 on Saturday, Jan. 18 at St. John Fisher College. Wells won by set scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-15.

For the weekend, Wells finished with a set record of 9-1 and swept two of the its three opponents. In all three matches, the Express put together three-consecutive set wins to clinch each match.

Against the Wildcats, the Express had to rally in its opening set. Wells trailed by six points three times and got its first lead after the 43rd point at 22-21. The Wildcats fought back to tie the first set at 23-23, but Wells scored the next two points for the opening-set win after a Justin Williams' kill followed by an attack error ended the set.

Wells never trailed in the second set and after giving up the first point of the third set, rallied with 10 of the next 11 points for a 10-2 lead and never looked back.

Robert Patzer led or co-led the team in three categories. Patzer had a team-high pair of blocks (one solo), four aces and co-led in digs with Joe Zimmerman after each registered a half-dozen.

Caden O'Loughlin recorded a team-high 10 kills with most of his setups coming from Josh Undari's 22 assists.
