Wells Baseball Drops Close Game In Season Debut

The Wells College baseball team played the first game in program history and fell to Alfred State by a 5-4 score in a game played at the Ripken Experience facility in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Pioneers scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning and picked up their first win of the season. Alfred State is now 1-8, and Wells is 0-1.

Alfred State built a 4-0 lead on a pair of first-inning runs and single runs in the third and fifth.

Wells got back into the game with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth. Tanner Dunkel started the rally with a leadoff single, and Mike Diehr, A.J. Nesci, and Justin Forster followed with three straight triples.

The Express tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when Tyler Young singled and advanced to second on an error. He was sacrificed to third and scored on a single to center field by Dylan Nolan.

Alfred State scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth on a two-out RBI triple.

Aaron Wintermute started on the mound for Wells and allowed nine hits and four earned runs in five innings of work. He had eight strikeouts and didn't walk a single batter. Christian Jorden pitched three shutout innings of relief with two hits allowed, two strikeouts and no walks.

Jared Bieber pitched the top of the ninth and took the loss. He recorded two outs by strikeout and gave up one hit.

Forster, Nolan, and Diehr had two hits each for Wells.

The Express is back on the field Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Albertus Magnus College.
