Baseball Spring Trip Continues With Pair Of Setbacks

The Wells College baseball team continued its spring trip to South Carolina with games Wednesday and Thursday. Wells fell by a score of 16-5 against Albertus Magnus on Wednesday night, and then suffered an 8-2 setback against Rutgers-Newark on Thursday morning. Games were played at The Ripken Experience facility in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Wells will take another crack at Albertus Magnus on Friday at 10 a.m. in Myrtle Beach in a game played at Carolina Forest High School.

Rutgers-Newark 8, Wells 2

Rutgers-Newark gradually built its lead through the middle innings and eventually led 8-0. The biggest inning was a three-run spot in the bottom of the fifth.

Wells answered with its two runs in the top of the seventh. Brandon Shirley delivered an RBI double to bring home Dylan Nolan with the first run. Later in the inning Shirley scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Young.

Zach Kemp pitched the first five innings for Wells and took the loss. He allowed six runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Johnny Hall pitched the final three innings and allowed two runs with a walk and a strikeout.

Mark Yorkey had a pair of singles and was 2-for-3 at the plate for Wells.
