Canton Outlasts Wells In Baseball Home Opener

The Wells College baseball team played its 2017 home opener Friday, March 24 at the Wells Turf Field in Aurora, N.Y. and fell by a score of 7-4 against visiting SUNY Canton. Wells rallied from an early deficit to tie the score at 4-4, but Canton scored the go-ahead and insurance runs in the late innings to get the win.

Wells is 0-5 on the season and Canton is 1-8. The Express continues a homestand Saturday at 1 p.m. with doubleheader games against Hilbert College. Sunday, Wells hosts D'Youville College for two games beginning at noon.

In Friday's game, Canton built a 4-0 run with two unearned runs in the top of the second and two more unearned runs in the top of the fourth.

Wells climbed back into the contest with an RBI single from Anthony Aumick to bring home Mike Diehr in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Wells loaded the bases with two outs and Brandon Shirley ripped a double to the fence in right-center to bring in all three runners and tie the score 4-4.

Canton scored one run in the sixth and two in the eighth to break the 4-4 tie.

Brandon Shirley started on the mound for Wells and allowed four unearned runs on four hits and five walks in five innings. Christian Jorden took the loss. He allowed one earned run and two hits in two innings with three walks. Garrett Gagnon pitched the final two innings and allowed two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Shirley's three-run double in the fourth was the only extra-base hit for Wells. Shirley had two hits in the game and four other players each singled.
