Baseball Offense Breaks Through In Win Over D'Youville

The Wells College baseball team wrapped up a weekend homestand with a doubleheader split against D'Youville College on Sunday, March 26 at the Wells Turf Field. Wells turned in its best day at the plate in its inaugural season with a 16-5 victory in the second game of the doubleheader. D'Youville won the opening game 9-4. The Express will play at home at 3 p.m. Tuesday with a doubleheader against Elmira College.

The visitors broke the game open with a six-run inning in the top of the fifth and went on to a victory. Wells scored twice in the third and twice in the sixth. Tanner Dunkel tripled and scored in the third, and Dylan Nolan singled to drive in Brandon Shirley, who reached base with a double. In the sixth, Chris Forney doubled to bring home Anthony Aumick and Forney scored on a sacrifice fly from Justin Forster.

Zach Kemp pitched four innings and had seven strikeouts, including striking out the side in the top of the first. Johnny Hall pitched the last three innings and had one strikeout.

Aumick and Tanner Dunkel each had two hits for the Express.

Wells 16, D'Youville 5

The Wells lineup came alive with 16 runs and 21 hits in the victory. Both totals were season-bests for the Express. Seven different players had multi-hit games led by a 4-for-4 day from Justin Forster with four runs scored. Tanner Dunkel was 3-for-3 and scored three times. A.J. Nesci and Greyson Avots had three hits each and drove in three runs each. Brandon Shirly had two doubles and three RBIs and Mark Yorkey had two hits and drove in four.

Christian Jorden earned the win on the mound. He worked five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. He had four strikeouts. Jared Bieber worked two hitless innings. He walked two and struck out one.
