Wells Baseball Defeats Alfred State

The Wells College baseball team ran its winning streak to five games with a comeback victory over Alfred State on Wednesday, April 19 at the Wells Turf Field. Wells won the non-conference game 4-3.

It was the first true night game at the Wells Turf Field complex and also contained an 11-minute rain delay. Wells improved to 10-15 on the year and Alfred State is 4-27.

Alfred State went ahead 2-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a double that brought in two runners.

All four of Wells' runs game in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Young walked and scored on a wild pitch. Greyson Avots and A.J. Nesci had back-to-back singles and Anthony Aumick walked to re-load the bases. Dylan Nolan hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run, and Brandon Shirley and Mike Diehr had back-to-back RBI singles to put the Express ahead.

Alfred State scored a single run in the seventh but got no closer.

Starting pitcher Jared Straight pitched five innings and earned the win. He had nine strikeouts Reliever Aaron Wintermute pitched the final four innings and picked up his first save with one walk and six strikeouts.

Avots and Shirley had three hits each.

Wells takes to the road this weekend with NEAC doubleheaders Saturday at Penn State Abington and Sunday at Penn State Berks.
