Penn State Berks Takes Two From Wells Baseball

The Wells College baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Penn State Berks on Sunday, April 23 at Hintz Athletic Field in Reading, Pa. Berks won the first game 4-3 with a three-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning. Penn State Berks then completed the sweep with a 16-9 win in the second game.

Wells is 10-17 overall and 1-7 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Penn State Berks is 13-15 overall and 7-3 in the NEAC. The Express continues NEAC play with a Wednesday, April 26 doubleheader at Keuka College beginning at 1 p.m.

The host Nittany Lions scored in the bottom of the first inning. Wells scored all three of its runs in the top of the fifth. Dylan Nolan drove in the first run on an infield single to score A.J. Nesci. Mike Diehr followed with a two-run single to right center that scored Brandon Shirley and Anthony Aumick.

Zach Kemp took the loss for Wells. He allowed five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. All three runs in the seventh were unearned, and scored on a two-run double. Kemp had four strikeouts.

Nesci had two hits for Wells. All nine Express hits were singles.

Penn State Berks 16, Wells 9

The teams combined for 25 runs and 27 hits. Penn State Berks led 13-2 after four innings before Wells came alive with a four-run fifth.

A.J. Nesci was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and he scored a run. Tyler Young had two hits including a double. Greyson Avots had a triple. Dylan Nolan had two RBIs.

Brandon Shirley was the starting pitcher and took the loss in two innings of work. Aaron Wintermute, Jared Strait, and Johnny Hall also worked out of the bullpen. Strait allowed just three hits and no runs in 2.2 innings with three strikeouts.
