The Wells College baseball team completed its first-ever doubleheader sweep of a North Eastern Athletic Conference opponent by defeating visiting Gallaudet University 3-2 in extra innings in the first game and 6-2 in the second game on Saturday, April 29 at the Wells Turf Field in Aurora, N.Y.
Wells improved to 12-19 overall on the season and 3-9 in the NEAC. Gallaudet fell to 9-28 overall and 4-10 in the conference. The Express hosts Lancaster Bible College on Sunday, April 30 at noon at the Wells Turf Field.
Wells 3, Gallaudet 2 (9 inn.)
The scheduled seven-inning game was scoreless into the top of the ninth, when Gallaudet took a two-run lead. Wells rallied in the bottom of the ninth for a one-run win.
Wells starting pitcher Zach Kemp didn't allow a hit until the top of the sixth. He pitched the complete game and earned the victory to improve his record to 4-3 on the year. Kemp scattered four hits over nine innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. Both ninth-inning runs were earned.
The Express got a second-inning double and fourth-inning triple from Dylan Nolan but couldn't muster a run until the bottom of the ninth. Nolan again led the offensive charge with a leadoff double. Mike Diehr hit an infield grounder that was thrown away and allowed Nolan to score from second and Diehr to move to second base. Tyler Young walked, and Mark Yorkey sacrificed to move the runners to second and third. An intentional walk loaded the bases and Gallaudet brought five defenders into the infield. A.J. Nesci bunted the first pitch down the first base line and none of the defenders had a play as Wells walked off with a victory.
Wells 6, Gallaudet 2
Aaron Wintermute pitched a complete-game victory for the Wells. He scattered four hits and didn't issue a walk over the nine innings. It was his first victory as a member of the Express, and he had three strikeouts.
Mike Diehr, Dylan Nolan, and Brandon Shirley had two hits each. Nolan hit a bases-loaded triple that scored three runs as part of Wells' five-run rally in the fifth. Greyson Avots scored two runs and tripled in the first inning.
