Back-To-Back Shutouts For Wells Baseball To Open Season

The Wells College baseball team started its season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Clarks Summit on Thursday, March 1 at the Wells Turf Field. Wells took the opening game 4-0 and then posted a 3-0 shutout in the second game. Both teams were playing their first games of the season.

Wells 4, Clarks Summit 0

Brandon Shirley starred in the season-opener. On the mound, he carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and earned the victory. Over five shutout innings he struck out nine batters, allowed just one hit, and didn't issue a single walk. At the plate, his first-inning homer gave Wells its first run of the season. He had an RBI triple and scored in the third.

Wells scored once in the second inning after a leadoff triple by KeAndre Sadler, Tyler Young brought the run in with a sacrifice fly.

In the third, A.J. Nesci led off with a single and came in to score on the triple by Shirley. Andrew Babcock singled to score Shirley.

Matt Morgan made his Wells College debut on the mound and pitched two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh. He allowed one walk with three strikeouts as Morgan and Shirley combined for a one-hit shutout.

Wells 3, Clarks Summit 0

Another shutout for the Wells pitching staff included four innings from starter Jared Strait and three innings for reliever Zach Kemp. Strait (1-0) earned the victory with four strikeouts and a walk. He allowed two hits. Kemp picked up the save with one hit allowed, four strikeouts and a walk.

Wells opened the scoring in the first inning. A.J. Nesci drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a two-out single by Andrew Babcock. Babcock had two hits in the game.

The big offensive moment for Wells was a two-run home run to right field by Dylan Nolan in the third inning, to bring in Nesci who reached on a leadoff single.
