Baseball Splits Games Against Cabrini

The Wells College baseball team opened its spring trip with a pair of games against Cabrini University in Aberdeen, Md. Wells won the second game of the day 5-4, after Cabrini took the opener 12-9.

Wells continues play Tuesday with a game against Clarks Summit at 6 p.m. at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Cabrini 12, Wells 9

Cabrini took a 12-0 lead after five innings before Wells charged back with nine runs over the final four innings.

Justin Forster led the way at the plate for Wells with four hits in five at-bats. He had two RBIs and scored one run. Forster had a two-run double in the ninth.

Tanner Dunkel delivered a bases-loaded triple in the eighth inning to drive in three runs.

Dylan Nolan had an RBI double in the seventh inning.

Brandon Shirley started and took the loss. He had four strikeouts. Matt Morgan and Johnny Hall pitched in relief.

Wells 5, Cabrini 4

The Express scored three runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 5-4 victory.

Wells got on the board in the third inning on an RBI double by Brandon Shirley to score Dylan Nolan. Anthony Aumick singled in the fifth to drive in Nolan and Wells led 2-0.

Cabrini scored all four of its runs in the sixth inning to go ahead.

The three-run eighth started with a single by Andrew Babcock and a walk to Tyler Young. Justin Forster reached on an error, which scored Babcock and moved Young to third. Tanner Dunkel was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

A.J. Nesci grounded into a double play, but Young scored to tie the game. Dylan Nolan came through with a two-out single to right to bring in Forster and give Wells a 5-4 lead.

Zach Kemp entered the game in the sixth inning and set Cabrini down in order in the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the one-run lead. He was the winning pitcher. Jared Strait worked five shutout innings. He allowed four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Babcock was 3-for-3 at the plate. Brandon Shirley had two hits including a double.
