Comeback Victory For Wells Baseball Against Canton

The Wells College baseball team rallied from an early four-run deficit and won the game with a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to defeat visiting SUNY Canton 7-6 on Thursday, March 22 at the Wells Turf Field.

The winning run in the bottom of the 10th came across on a single to right field by Brandon Shirley to score Dylan Nolan. Nolan led off the inning with a double down the right field line and moved to third base on a balk.

Canton scored twice in the first and twice in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Wells answered in the bottom of the third. After the first two batters were retired, three straight walks loaded the bases. Tyler Young came through with a double to the gap in right center to clear the bases.

Wells went ahead in the fourth. Shirley doubled to score A.J. Nesci and it moved Nolan to third. A ground ball to the right side from Anthony Aumick brought in Nolan with the go-ahead run.

Canton homered in the fifth to tie it and went back in front on an RBI double in the sixth.

Wells tied the score in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Dylan Nolan to bring in A.J. Nesci.

Zach Kemp worked the final three innings on the mound for Wells and picked up the victory. He allowed three hits. Jared Strait pitched the first two innings and yielded two unearned runs on one hit. Matt Morgan and Mark Yorkey also worked in relief.

Young was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two doubles. Nolan was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Shirley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The victory improved Wells' record to 8-2 this season. SUNY Canton is 3-8.

Wells has a pair of weekend doubleheaders scheduled this weekend at home. The Express takes on D'Youville on Saturday for games beginning at 2:30 p.m. and Alfred State on Sunday for games beginning at 1 p.m.
