Winning Ways Continue For Wells Baseball

The Wells College baseball team continued its strong start to the season with a doubleheader sweep of D'Youville College on Sunday, March 25 at the Wells Turf Field. The Express took the first game 4-1 and won the second game 8-7 with the winning run scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Wells is 10-2 through its first 12 games this season. D'Youville is 2-6. The Express has won four games in a row and eight of its last nine. Wells is back in action for a doubleheader Monday, March 26 at home against Alfred State beginning at 3:30. Tuesday, March 27, Wells hosts Southern Vermont for a home game at 3 p.m.

Wells 4, D'Youville 1

The Express took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Tyler Young that scored Brandon Shirley and Dylan Nolan. Young doubled again in the sixth to bring in Shirley, and Derek Shea singled to center field to score Young later in the sixth.

Brandon Shirley started on the mound and worked six effective innings. He allowed one unearned run on five hits with three walks. He had seven strikeouts. Mark Yorkey earned the save by pitching the top of the seventh. The game ended on a 6-4-3 double play turned by the Express.

Young was 2-for-3 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. Shirley was 2-for-3. Derek Shea was 3-for-3 with two singles and a double.

Wells 8, D'Youville 7

The Express built a 5-1 lead after two innings. Wells scored three unearned runs in the first. Dylan Nolan had an RBI triple in the second to bring home Tanner Dunkel, and Brandon Shirley followed with a sacrifice fly to score Nolan.

D'Youville came back and eventually scored four times in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Shirley delivered a single to right field that scored Tanner Dunkel.

D'Youville went back ahead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly. Wells scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for the win. After two walks to the first two batters, a sac bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Mark Yorkey hit a ground ball to bring home A.J. Nesci with the tying run. Then, with two outs, an infield error allowed Matt Rash to score the winning run.

Tanner Dunkel and Anthony Aumick had three hits each. Justin Forster had two hits. Nolan and Aumick had triples.

Zach Kemp earned the victory in relief. He pitched the seventh inning. Johnny Hall started and worked two and a third. Alexander Mott pitched two and two-thirds in relief.
