Nationally-Ranked Cortland Defeats Wells Baseball

The Wells College baseball team traveled to SUNY Cortland and lost 17-4 against the Red Dragons at Wallace Field in Cortland. Cortland is ranked 14th in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 poll and a perennial national power in NCAA Division III baseball. The Red Dragons have qualified for 25 straight national tournaments.

This was the first game against a nationally-ranked opponent in the Wells College baseball program's two-year history.

Cortland built a 15-0 lead with six runs in the first, two in the third, four in the fourth, and three more in the fifth.

Wells scored its first run in the top of the sixth inning. Tanner Dunkel walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. An infield ground out advanced him to third, and an infield grounder from Dylan Nolan brought Dunkel home with the first run for the Express.

The Express added three runs in the top of the seventh. Derek Shea delivered a sacrifice fly to score Anthony Aumick, and Tanner Dunkel and A.J. Nesci had RBI singles in the rally.

Five Wells players each had one hit, including a double from Aumick.

Zach Kemp was the losing pitcher.

Wells returns to action Monday, April 2 for a 3 p.m. home game against Marywood.
