Baseball Breaks Through With Huge Inning In Win

The Wells College baseball team split a doubleheader against Gallaudet University on Saturday, April 28 at the Wells Turf Field. Gallaudet took the opening game 3-2, and Wells won the second game 22-11.

Wells is 12-16 overall and 2-10 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Gallaudet is 4-28-1 overall and 1-11 in the NEAC.

Wells is back in action Sunday, April 29 with a NEAC doubleheader against Lancaster Bible College beginning at noon.

Wells took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Andrew Babcock led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a double by Justin Forster.

The Bison scored three unearned runs in the top of the sixth and held on for the win. After a two-out error put a runner on first, a double and a homer followed and brought in three.

Wells pulled a run back in the bottom of the sixth when a run scored on a wild pitch.

Mark Yorkey walked to lead off the seventh and A.J. Nesci walked later in the inning, but back-to-back fly outs ended the threat.

Zach Kemp started and pitched all seven innings none of the three runs he allowed were earned. He yielded four hits and one walk with six strikeouts.

Wells 22, Gallaudet 11

The Express scored 22 runs, matching a season-best total, on 16 hits.

Wells scored twice in the fifth inning on back-to-back RBI singles from Anthony Aumick and Tanner Dunkel to take a 3-2 lead.

The Express scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Aumick had a two-run single and Mark Yorkey had an RBI hit to bring in AUmick.

Gallaudet scored four times in the top of the seventh to pull within 7-6, but the Express scored 15 runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The first five batters walked and all of them scored. Wells had eight hits in the inning including a two-run double by Aumick, a two-run double by Brandon Shirley, and a two-run single by Tanner Dunkel.

Aumick finished the game 3-for-4 with seven RBIs and three runs scored. Shirley was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, and five runs scored. Dunkel had three hits and drove in four.

Tyler Young, Mark Yorkey, and Andrew Babcock had two hits each.

Shirley was the starting pitcher and earned the victory. He allowed two runs on two hits with eight walks and eight strikeouts.

Both teams walked 16 batters to total 32 walks, against a total of 23 hits.
