Extra-Innings Win Part Of Baseball Split For Wells

The Wells College baseball team picked up another split in a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader at Keuka College on Tuesday, May 1. Wells won the first game 9-8 in eight innings, and Keuka took the second game by a 12-9 score.

Wells is 13-19 overall and 3-13 in the NEAC. Keuka is 16-13 overall and 9-4 in the conference. Wells will host SUNY Cobleskill on Thursday, April 3 for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

Wells 9, Keuka 8 (8 inn.)

A sacrifice fly by Brandon Shirley brought in Dylan Nolan with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth and Wells closed out the game in the bottom of the inning.

There were four lead changes in the game. Wells scored three times in the second inning, then trailed 6-4 after four innings. Four runs for Wells in the fifth made it 8-6. Keuka tied it with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and then Wells pushed across the winning run in the top of the eighth.

An RBI double for Justin Forster started the scoring for Wells, followed by a run-scoring groundout and a sacrifice fly from Dylan Nolan.

Brandon Shirley had an RBI single to score Tanner Dunkel in the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Forster had his second RBI double of the game. Andrew Babcock singled in Forster, and Dunkel tripled to bring in Babcock. A sacrifice fly from A.J. Nesci scored Dunkel with the eighth run of the game for Wells.

Keuka tied it on a two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh.

Derek Shea earned the pitching win in relief of Zach Kemp. Kemp pitched six innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Shea allowed the two runs in the seventh, but retired three Wolves batters in a row after a leadoff single in the eighth.

Forster and Dunkel each had three hits and scored two runs. Forster had two doubles and two RBIs. Dunkel tripled and drove in one. Babcock, Shea, and Shirley each had two hits.

Keuka 12, Wells 9

The Wolves scored five times in the sixth and added four in the eighth to lead the way to a game-two win.

Wells scored in the first on a sac fly by Kevin Spaeth. Wells scored two more runs in the second inning. The first came in on a bases-loaded walk by A.J. Nesci and the second on a sac fly by Dylan Nolan. In the fifth, Tyler Young delivered an RBI single for Wells, and a Keuka error brought in another run.

After Keuka posted its two big innings, Wells added three in the top of the ninth. Anthony Aumick and Tyler Young had RBI hits and Andrew Babcock drove in one with a sac fly.

Brandon Shirley was the starting pitcher and took the loss. He allowed eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Matt Morgan and Johnny Hall worked in relief.

Young, Aumick, and Spaeth each had two hits.
