The Wells College baseball team swept a doubleheader in North Eastern Athletic Conference play against SUNY Cobleskill on Thursday, May 3 at the Wells Turf Field. Wells won the first game 5-1, and took the second game 12-3.
Wells is 15-19 overall and finished conference play with a 5-13 record. Cobleskill is 2-25 overall and 1-11 in the NEAC.
The Express plays a non-conference home game Saturday, May 5 at 1 p.m. against Ithaca College.
Wells 5, Cobleskill 1
The Express got a strong outing from starting pitcher Jared Strait, who allowed one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a seven-inning complete game victory. Strait is 3-4 on the season. In his last three appearances, Strait has allowed four earned runs over 16 innings with nine strikeouts and three walks.
The offensive production largely came in a three-run fourth inning that included a two-run double for Andrew Babcock and an RBI groundout from Tanner Dunkel. Dylan Nolan had an RBI single in the third innings and Brandon Shirley stole third and scored on an error in the fifth.
Shirley had two hits for Wells.
Wells 12, Cobleskill 3
The Express scored at least one run in six consecutive innings and cruised to a win in the second game. Wells scored two runs in the second, third, and sixth innings, once each in the fourth and fifth, and capped the string with four runs in the seventh.
Justin Forster, Dylan Nolan, Kevin Spaeth, and A.J. Nesci had two hits each.
Nesci singled in a run in the second. Spaeth had an RBI groundout in the third, followed by an RBI hit from Andrew Babcock. Dylan Nolan's sac fly brought in a run in the fourth.
Tyler Young hit a solo homer in the fifth inning.
A two-run single for Spaeth in the sixth game Wells an 8-1 lead.
Dylan Nolan had a bases-loaded double to score three runs in the seventh and later scored on a sac fly by Brandon Shirley.
Christian Jorden had a ninth-inning single for the Express.
Four Wells pitchers combined on the victory. Johnny Hall started and worked four innings. Alexander Mott picked up the win with two innings of relief. He allowed one hit and one run. Garrett Gagnon had three strikeouts in two innings, and Mark Yorkey pitched a scoreless ninth.
