The Wells College baseball team dropped a pair of games as it continued its spring-break series of games in Myrtle Beach, S.C. On Tuesday, March 12, Wells lost 9-6 in extra innings to Albertus Magnus. On Wednesday, March 13 the Express lost 13-0 in a non-conference game against fellow North Eastern Athletic Conference member Penn College.
Wells faces Clarks Summit for a single game Thursday, March 14 at 6 p.m. and wraps up the week at the Ripken Experience facility with a Friday doubleheader against Centenary (N.J.). Wells is 1-5 on the young season.
Albertus Magnus 9, Wells 6 (10 inn.)
A back-and-forth game was close throughout. Albertus Magnus scored twice in the top of the first but Wells answered with two in the bottom of the inning on a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly.
A Derek Shea sacrifice fly in the second gave Wells its first lead and brought in Jordan VanHerpe, who tripled earlier in the inning.
Both teams scored one run in the third inning, with Wells taking advantage of a passed ball with two runners on base.
Wells went ahead 5-3 with a single run in the fourth on a double-play grounder that brought in Jordan VanHerpe.
Albertus Magnus scored a single run in the eighth on a wild pitch, and Wells carried a 5-4 lead into the top of the ninth. A two-out double brought in the game-tying run.
Wells had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth but didn't score the winning run. Albertus Magnus scored three times in the 10th on a pair of run-scoring two-out hits and won the game.
Jordan VanHerpe was 4-for-5 and scored three runs. Derek Shea was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI sac fly. VanHerpe and Shea both tripled in the game.
Jared Strait was the starting pitcher and allowed three earned runs on seven hits over five innings with five strikeouts. Alexander Mott pitched two innings in relief of Strait with one unearned run allowed. Derek Shea struck out three and took the loss in two and two-thirds innings of relief work.
Penn College 13, Wells 0
The Wildcats limited Wells to three hits over nine innings. Jordan VanHerpe, Tanner Dunkel, and Tyler Young singled for the Express. Noah Smith was the starting pitcher and took the loss in five innings of work. Evan Ecker pitched three innings of effective relief for the Express with one run allowed.
Penn College scored three in each of the first, fifth, and sixth innings and had 16 hits in the game. Nathan Holt pitched a complete-game victory for the Wildcats with nine strikeouts.
