Doubleheader Sweep For Wells Baseball

The Wells College baseball team swept a doubleheader against Centenary University to wrap up its week of games at Myrtle Beach, S.C. Wells took the opening game 7-6 and won the second game 10-3 on Friday, March 15. The Express is 3-5 on the year and Centenary is 3-8.

Game 1 - WELLS 7, CENTENARY 6

The Express rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the third inning to come back and win. Wells scored twice in the bottom of the third, added four more in the fourth to tie the score 6-6, and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

The third-inning rally included an RBI groundout from Anthony Aumick and an RBI single from Mark Yorkey. In the fourth, Jordan VanHerpe tripled to bring in A.J. Nesci, and Tanner Dunkel had a two-run single, before Yorkey hit a sacrifice fly.

The decisive run for Wells was another sac fly from Yorkey to score Aumick in the bottom of the sixth.

In the seventh, Centenary had two runners on base with one out, but Wells turned a game-ending double play.

Matt Morgan picked up the win in relief of Zach Kemp. Morgan pitched the final two innings and allowed one hit and one run. Kemp worked five innings with six strikeouts.

Dunkel was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Aumick had two hits and two runs scored. 

Game 2 - WELLS 10, CENTENARY 3

An eight-run sixth broke open a tie game and lifted Wells to a doubleheader sweep. Kevin Spaeth had an RBI double and Mark Yorkey had a three-run double.

Anthony Aumick had an RBI single in the first and A.J. Nesci had an RBI single in the fourth.

Mark Yorkey was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Nesci, Aumick, and Derek Shea had two hits each.

Alexander Mott pitched the first three innings, and Derek Shea pitched the next three innings in relief to pick up the win. Mott allowed one earned run on four hits and Shea's three innings of scoreless relief included three strikeouts with one unearned run.
