Utica Rallies To Win Back-And-Forth Game Over Wells Baseball

The Wells College baseball team held an early lead, fought back from a deficit to regain the lead, before Utica rallied back and the visiting Pioneers won 13-10 over the Express at the Wells Turf Field on Wednesday, April 3.

Both teams scored once in the first, but Wells took the lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run single to centerfield by Jordan VanHerpe that scored Mark Yorkey and Tanner Dunkel.

After Utica scored in the top of the third, Wells scored two more in the bottom half on a solo homer from Dylan Nolan and Yorkey's sacrifice fly that scored Tyler Young.

The Pioneers tied the score 5-5 with three in the top of the fourth and went ahead with three runs in the sixth.

Wells scored five times in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Spaeth had an RBI single, VanHerpe had an RBI double, and Anthony Aumick had an RBI single to tie it. The Express took the lead on a sac fly by Dylan Nolan and an RBI ground out by Derek Shea.

Utica answered with three runs in the seventh and added an insurance run in the ninth on a homer by Tim Quinlan, who was 6-for-6 in the game.

Eight of the nine starters in the Wells lineup hit safely. Nolan homered, tripled, singled, drove in two and scored twice. VanHerpe had a single and double, three RBIs and a run scored. Mark Yorkey had a triple, walked twice, and scored twice.

Derek Shea was the starting pitcher and struck out two and worked into the fourth inning. Jared Strait and Zach Kemp pitched scoreless innings in relief.

Utica is 4-11 overall and Wells is 7-12. The Express is back in action on the road this weekend with a three-game conference series at SUNY Poly with two games Saturday, April 6 and one game Sunday, April 7.
