Abington Completes Series Sweep With Comeback Win

The Wells College baseball team wrapped up a three-game series against Penn State Abington and the Nittany Lions won 4-2 on Sunday morning, April 14. Wells turned three double plays in the game, a single-game record in the three-year history of the Wells baseball program.

Penn State Abington scored a single run in the first but Wells took the lead in the bottom of the third. Kevin Spaeth singled and moved to second. A bunt from Jordan VanHerpe was errantly thrown down the right-field line which scored Spaeth and sent VanHerpe to third base. An RBI groundout from Mark Yorkey scored VanHerpe and the Express led 2-1.

That lead held until the seventh when Abington scored three times on an RBI single, an error in the infield, and a sacrifice fly. Wells managed one baserunner over the final three innings and didn't score.

Alexander Mott pitched an effective game with four runs allowed, three earned, over seven and two-thirds innings. He had one walk and one strikeout and allowed 11 hits, of which nine were singles. Mark Yorkey pitched the final four outs for Wells.

The Express turned double plays in the fifth, sixth, and ninth innings.

Five different players hit safely for Wells including a double by Dylan Nolan.

Wells is back in action Tuesday, April 16 for a 5 p.m. home game against Elmira College.
