Strong Pitching Stymies Cazenovia In Wells Baseball Win

The Wells College baseball team hosted Cazenovia College for a North Eastern Athletic Conference game and Wells won 5-1 on Thursday, April 18 at the Wells Turf Field. This was a rescheduled game from the upcoming weekend series at Cazenovia, moved to Wells because of field conditions and weather forecast.

Wells improved to 5-5 in NEAC games and 11-16 overall. Cazenovia is 1-8 in the conference and 3-15 overall.

Wells batted in the top half of each inning, and scored in the top of the first. Dylan Nolan singled to third base and an infield throwing error allowed Mark Yorkey to score on the play. Wells added two runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Anthony Aumick that brought home Tanner Dunkel, followed by a triple from Ian Crawford to score Aumick.

In the fifth, with Derek Shea on second, a line drive to center by A.J. Nesci got past the center fielder and Nesci two runs scored on an inside-the-park home run.

Cazenovia scratched out an unearned run in the sixth, but Wells limited the damage by turning a double play with the bases loaded and nobody out in the inning.

Zach Kemp pitched an effective game. He worked seven innings and allowed three hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts and two walks. Kemp improved his record to 3-3 on the season. Alexander Mott pitched the final two innings and set down the side in order in the eighth and ninth innings.

These teams will meet again under similar circumstances Saturday, April 20 at 6 p.m. here at Wells, in which Cazenovia will be designated as the home team.
