Shea Shines In Baseball Shutout Win At Oneonta

Derek Shea pitched a three-hit shutout as the Wells College baseball team went on the road and defeated Oneonta 8-0 on Wednesday, April 24. It was the fourth win in a row for the Express, which establishes a season-best winning streak.

Shea's pitching was the story of the game. Four Red Dragons reached base in the game on two singles, a double, and an infield error. He struck out seven batters and walked none. It is the first nine-inning complete game shutout by a Wells pitcher in the three-year history of the program. The only other pitcher to throw a complete-game shutout was Zach Kemp in a 3-0 win over SUNY Poly in the 2017 season.

Oneonta defeated Wells 11-3 earlier this season in Aurora.

The Wells offense broke through in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs on infield grounders that brought home Jordan VanHerpe and Dylan Nolan.

An Oneonta error in the seventh allowed A.J. Nesci and Kevin Spaeth to score and Nolan followed with an RBI single to bring in VanHerpe and give Wells a 5-0 lead. The Express added insurance runs in the ninth on RBI singles by Nolan and Tyler Young, and an RBI double from Shea.

Shea allowed a leadoff double in the ninth but left the runner stranded with a pop up, strikeout, and grounder to first.

Nolan was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. VanHerpe had two hits and scored three times. Anthony Aumick had a pair of singles and Kevin Spaeth tripled.

Wells is back home for a North Eastern Athletic Conference series Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28. A three-game set against visiting Keuka College will include a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
