Wells Wins On Senior Day; Clinches Playoff Spot

The Wells College baseball team defeated SUNY Cobleskill 5-0 on Sunday, May 5 at the Wells Turf Field. The victory secured a North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff berth for the Express and also established a program record for overall wins in a season.

Starting pitcher Jared Strait pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the way for the Express. Over nine innings he had seven strikeouts and two walks, one of which was intentional. It is the second time in the last two weeks that a Wells starter worked nine scoreless innings after Derek Shea's 8-0 victory at Oneonta on April 24.

The only trouble he faced came in the top of the fourth. A walk and a single put runners on second and third with one out. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Strait got a strikeout and infield ground out to get out of the jam.

Wells scored a single run in the bottom of the first on a two-out single by A.J. Nesci that scored Jordan VanHerpe.

The Express added four runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single from Dylan Nolan, another RBI single from A.J. Nesci and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Young.

Cobleskill had one batter reach base over the final four innings of the game.

Nesci had two hits and two RBIs for the Express. VanHerpe scored two runs and Nolan drove in two runs.

Wells entered the game in sixth place in the conference standings and the victory guaranteed a spot in the NEAC playoffs as Wells has a 16-20 overall record and 9-9 record in NEAC games.

Prior to the game, Wells honored three graduating seniors (pictured below) – Ramon Solano, Matt Morgan, and Alexander Mott.  Solano is a three-year member of the team and a business major from Orlando, Florida. Morgan is a two-year player at Wells and is a business major from Cortland, New York. Mott is a two-year player at Wells and is a business major from Baldwinsville, New York.
