MUSTANGS SHUTOUT EXPRESS FIELD HOCKEY

Aurora, NY –Kayla Walker (Oneida) scored the only two goals of the game as the Morrisville State Mustangs defeated the Wells College Express 2-0 in field hockey action Wednesday evening at Wells. Stephanie Smith (Cedarville) and Kelsey Pellegrino (Cicero) split time in net recording two saves each for the Mustangs. With the loss the Express fall to 1-5 while the Mustangs improve to 3-2.

The Express held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners on the day.

Walker would start the scoring early blasting a rebound by Express goalie Martha Knowlan for a 1-0 lead just 8:47 in the first half. With time expired in the first half, the Express were granted a corner and they would take advantage of the extra time, scoring off a shot from Paige Corneby (Barton) to tie the game at 1-1 or so they thought. Upon review by the referees, it was decided that the ball had come outside of the circle officially ending the half before Corneby was able to score.

Wells would have a second chance to tie the game in the second half. Shelby Moszkowicz (Rochester) was awarded a penalty shot, but for the third straight game an Express penalty shot was denied, this time by Mustang goalie Stephanie Smith, keeping a fragile 1-0 lead for Morrisville. Walker would officially seal the win for Mustangs as she scored her second goal on a scramble in front of the net putting Morrisville up 2-0 with 22-seconds remaining in the game.

The Express will have six straight days off before they travel to Keystone College on Wednesday, September 23 to take on the Giants at 4:00 pm in La Plume, PA.
