WELLS FIELD HOCKEY DEFEATS ST. JOHN FISHER

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College field hockey team scored late in the first half, and held on to defeat the St. John Fisher Cardinals 1-0 on Wednesday evening in Aurora. Courtney Grosser (Penfield, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for the Express while Amanda Catalano (Lockport, N.Y.) earned the victory in net with one save.

St. John Fisher would pressure early but Catalano came up huge, making a blocker save on a point blank shot from Marissa Vedella (Elma, N.Y.) to keep the game scoreless through the first 18-minutes.

With time winding down in the first half, the Express would capitalize on a penalty corner. After the initial shot was blocked, a scramble ensued in front of the net and Grosser took advantage, driving home a loose ball in front of the cage for a 1-0 Express lead.

The two teams played a tight second half with Wells registering the only shot on goal as the Express held on for the win.

Although the score showed 1-0 the Express controlled the majority of the game holding a commanding edge in penalty corners (12-2) and shots (8-2).

Wells returns to action this weekend when they take on Baypath College at 3 p.m. in Aurora.
