Express Tripled Up By Bombers, 6-2

ITHACA, N.Y. – Despite goals from freshman Courtney Bastian (West Winfield, N.Y.) and senior Shelby Moszkowicz (Rochester, N.Y.), the Wells College field hockey team fell to the Bombers of Ithaca College by a 6-2 margin Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Express fall to 0-1 on the young season while the Bombers overall record stands at 1-0.

Following a Bombers goal by Katie Kennedy within the first six minutes of the contest, Bastian scored her first collegiate goal at 16:02 of the first half to knot the score at one goal apiece. Freshman Valencia Chavez (Lakeside, Calif.) collected her first collegiate point on the play, feeding her fellow classmate prior to the goal.

With the score at 3-1 following Ithaca goals by Julia Conroy and Andrea Pace, Moszkowicz cut into the deficit with her first goal of the season at 34:12 of the half, less than a minute after Pace's strike. The Bombers, who saw goals from six different goal scorers, went on to score three more unanswered goals to conclude the contest.

Freshman goaltender Kylie Nishioka (Encinitas, Calif.) drew the loss in her first collegiate game, halting 13-of-19 shots on goal. Nishioka's 13 saves are the second most by a member of the Wells College field hockey team dating back to the start of the 2009 season. Kelly Singleton and Samantha Grassi split time in goal for the Bombers, making two saves on four shots cumulatively.

The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 1 as they face-off against the Wildcats of Bay Path College in a 10:00 a.m. road contest.
