HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Freshman netminder Cassi Greene (Martville, N.Y.) turned aside six shots on goal in her collegiate debut, but the Wells College field hockey team posted a 5-0 loss to the Highlanders of Houghton College Monday afternoon at Burke Field. With the loss, the Express fall to 1-2 on the season while the Highlanders collect their first win of the season in their first game.
In the contest, forward Maesa Phongsamouth led all Highlanders on the scoresheet, potting two goals while Ashley Engle chipped in with a goal and an assist. Rachel Stefanski and Adria Bridgwood added goals of their own to the scoresheet. For the Express, forward Avary McKinney (Rochester, N.H.) led the team with two shots on goal that were successfully turned aside by Hillery Duman.
Houghton was the beneficiary of 16 penalty corners as opposed to the one penalty corner drawn by the Express. In total, Houghton out-shot the Express by a 16-to-4 margin.
Greene (0-1) drew the loss, halting 6-of-11 shots on goal in the complete game effort. Duman (1-0) picked up the win, turning aside all three shots on goal that she faced. Freshman Emily Thompson relieved Duman in the waning minutes of the contest and made one save.
The Express return to action Friday, Sept. 7 as they travel to Morrisville State College for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
