AURORA, N.Y. - Despite being out-shot by a collective 25-to-2 margin, the Wells College field hockey team posted a 1-0 penalty stroke victory over the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College Monday afternoon. The Express improve to 3-6 overall on the season while the Soaring Eagles fall to 3-5 on the year.

Following 100 minutes of scoreless action, including 70 minutes of regulation time and 30 minutes of overtime play, freshman Courtney Bastian (West Winfield, N.Y.) and senior captain Shelby Moszkowicz (Rochester, N.Y.) buried their shootout opportunities to secure the 1-0 victory. For the Soaring Eagles, only Ashley Palmer was able to convert her attempt on Express netminder Kylie Nishioka (Encinitas, Calif.).

The contest marked the first game dating back to Sept. 18, 2010 that was determined via penalty strokes. The last penalty stroke victory for the Express came on Sept. 30, 2000 as they edged SUNY New Paltz with Jennifer Watts '01, Natasha Hauptfleisch '04 and Flo Weinberg '02 each converting their shootout opportunity.

The Soaring Eagles appeared to have their first shooter, Shannon Nelligan, score on Nishioka, but an improperly submitted shootout lineup for Elmira resulted in a reshoot that was missed.

In regulation time, the Express were outshot by a 25-to-2 margin. Elmira also boasted a 30-to-5 advantage on penalty corners, but the Wells College defense was able to stave off any offensive opportunities by the Soaring Eagles. Freshman Valencia Chavez (Lakeside, Calif.) and Moszkowicz recorded the only shots for Wells during the first 100 minutes.

Nishioka (3-2) collected her third win of the year, turning aside all nine shots on net that she faced. Lauren Thomas (3-5) draws her fifth overall loss on the year, despite not facing a shot on goal during the game's first 100 minutes.

The Express return to action Wednesday, Oct. 3 as they travel to face-off against the Lakers of Oswego State University in a 4:00 p.m. tilt.
