Lakers Set Down Field Hockey, 4-2

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Freshman Courtney Bastian (West Winfield, N.Y.) recorded her first career multi-point game, but the Wells College field hockey team posted a 4-2 loss to the Lakers of Oswego State University Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Express fall to 3-7 overall while the Lakers improve to 2-7 on the year.

Oswego State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, as both Alyssa Hare and Ashley Collins struck within the game's first 8:03. To begin the second half, the Lakers collected their third goal at 38:29 as Ashley Fiorille forced home the ball through a scramble near the left post to further extend the lead.

The Express did not go quietly, scoring the game's next two goals. Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) powered home a shot at 46:36 that trickled past Lakers netminder Grace Lombardi for the first Express goal. Junior Valencia Chavez (Lakeside, Calif.) converted her second goal of the season at 64:08, forcing home a Bastian feed in the middle of a scramble off of a penalty corner. Bastian collected helpers on the only two goals of the game for the Express.

Collins scored her second goal of the game as time expired in the second half to add extra insurance for the Lakers.

Goaltender Kylie Nishioka (Encinitas, Calif.) started the game for the Express in goal, allowing two goals on seven shots on net while drawing the no decision. In relief, Cassi Greene (Martville, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss, falling to 1-5 after allowing two goals on eight shots on net. Lombardi (2-4) collected the victory, despite not making a save on either shot on goal that she faced.

The Express return to action Saturday, Oct. 6 as they face-off against the Golden Flyers of Nazareth College in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
