Field Hockey Charges Past Marywood, 1-0

AURORA, N.Y. – Freshman Courtney Bastian (West Winfield, N.Y.) extended her season-high point streak to three games as the Wells College field hockey team posted a 1-0 victory over the Pacers of Marywood University Monday afternoon. With the victory, the Express improve to 4-8 overall while the Pacers fall to 1-8 overall on the year. Including last year's schedule, the Express now boast an 8-4 record across the 12 games played on the Wells College campus.

Bastian potted her fifth goal of the season only 13:48 into the second half, lifting the Express to a 1-0 lead of which they would not relinquish. With play moving from right to left, junior Valencia Chavez (Lakeside, Calif.) sent a ball through the right side of the crease to a crashing Bastian, who redirected the attempt past Pacers goaltender Natalie Winters for the score.

In only her 12th career contest, Bastian has already seen her name rise through the program leaderboards. She now ranks 14th all-time in program history with 13 points (5-3=13), scoring five goals and three assists. Her 13 points also grant her the eighth highest single season total in program history, trailing Lydia Van Berkhout for eighth place all time. Van Berkhout scored seven goals for 14 points (7-0=14) in the 1994 season.

Express goaltender Kylie Nishioka (Encinitas, Calif.) collects her fourth victory of the season by halting all eight shots on goal that she faced, improving to 4-4 overall on the year. With four career victories, Nishioka has the second most wins by an Express goaltender, tying her with teammate Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) and Abby Lawrence '99 who each recorded four wins in their career. Nishioka is only one career victory away from tying the career wins record of five, held by Bethany Cereo '10, Ali Formicola '07 and Amanda Catalano.

Nishioka's three shutouts in one season tie her for first place all-time alongside Catalano and Zamir Vasquez '04, with Vasquez holding the all-time career record for shutouts with five to her credit.

The Express also defeated the Pacers for only the first time in program history - entering today's game, Wells College was 0-5 while being outscored by a cumulative 21-to-5 margin.

Natalie Winters (1-8) drew the loss for the Pacers, allowing one goal against only two shots faced.
