Stokes Scores In 8-1 Field Hockey Loss To Scranton

AURORA, N.Y. – Freshman Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.Y.) scored her third goal of the season as the Wells College field hockey team posted an 8-1 loss to the Royals from the University of Scranton Sunday afternoon at the Athletic Association Field. With the loss, Wells falls to 3-11 overall on the year while the Royals improve to an impressive 11-1 through 12 games.

Alyssa Fania led all Royals in point scoring, striking three times and chipping in an assist for Scranton. Alyssa Whitman, Meghan Kearney, Emily Goss, and Elizabeth Franko added additional tallies for the visiting Royals. Wells also allowed an own goal as a powerful blast from outside of the circle by a Scranton forward deflected in off of an Express defender for the second goal of the game.

Stokes earned her third goal of the season in the 68th minute, playing give-and-go with junior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) before firing a blast toward the right post. The ball deflected off of a Scranton defender past goalkeeper Kaila Cahoon for the first goal of the game for the hosts.

Wells goalkeeper Sydney Line (Northport, N.Y.) drew the loss, allowing eight goals while facing 17 shots on net. Maria Begliomini earned the start for Scranton, making one save before yielding to Cahoon in the second half. Making her collegiate debut, Cahoon allowed one goal on three shots.

With efforts toward raising awareness for breast cancer research, the Express donned all pink jerseys during the game. The jerseys were generously furnished by Howard Cohen of Cool Breeze Printing and Embroidery – Howard is the father of freshman Lexi Cohen (Newtown, Pa.).

The Express conclude their season this Thursday, Oct. 17 as they host the Lakers of Oswego State College in a 4:00 p.m. contest at the Athletic Association Field.
