Season In Review: 2013 Wells College Field Hockey

Every Friday throughout the summer of 2014, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with field hockey on Friday, May 16, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells' 14 NCAA Division III varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

The Wells College field hockey team wrapped up its 38th year as a varsity program in 2013. Under first year Head Coach Kylie Hrehor, a squad of 13 players predominantly comprised of underclassmen played a highly-competitive schedule that included Landmark Conference runner-up Scranton and numerous Empire 8 Conference foes. Wells returns all but one player, graduating senior Avary McKinney (Rochester, N.Y.), as they look to improve their fortunes in the 2014 season.

  • EXTRA TIME? NO PROBLEM!: Wells opened their home calendar with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory against Morrisville State College on Aug. 31. Sophomore Courtney Bastian (West Winfield, N.Y.) scored only 3:55 into the overtime period to grant the Express their third overtime victory dating back to October 2011.
  • CLIMBING THE RANKS: Bastian concluded her second season in a Wells uniform with four goals and two assists for 10 points (4-2=10). Entering her junior year, Bastian ranks ninth all-time in team history with 25 total points via 10 goals and five assists (10-5=25).
  • FLEXING MUSCLES: The Express boasted one of the strongest offenses in recent memory. Cumulatively, Wells struck for 41 total offensive points via 15 goals and 11 assists (15-11=41) for the second-most points scored dating back to the 2008 season.
  • TRIPLE DIGITS: With a 7-0 victory against Bay Path on Sept. 28, the field hockey team at Wells registered its 100th win in team history. Furthermore, the Express scored seven goals in a game for the first time in nearly 10 seasons and the 10th time since the program's inception in 1976.
  • A LOOK FORWARD: Wells, who plays a non-conference schedule, will welcome strong opponents to the fold in 2014 as they face-off against Bryn Mawr, Rivier and Ferrum for the first time. The Express will also rekindle rivalries with several institutions, including Ramapo (last game Sept. 20, 2008), Goucher (last game Oct. 11, 1992) and St. Lawrence (last game Oct. 8, 1988).
