Field Hockey Doubled Up By Goucher, 4-2

TOWSON, Md. – The Wells College field hockey team posted a 4-2 road loss to the Gophers of Goucher College on Sunday. Wells drops to 0-2 on the season while Goucher (2-0) won for the second time in as many games.

With Wells trailing by a 3-0 margin, senior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season with a hard, low shot to cut into the Goucher lead. Just under three minutes later, Fargnoli set up junior Courtney Bastian (West Winfield, N.Y.) to shrink the deficit to one goal. Goucher added a late insurance goal in the second half to establish a two goal lead.

Goucher outshot the Express by a 34-to-3 margin and the hosts were awarded 18 penalty corners in the 70 minute affair. Rachel Crain, Justine Ruhlin and Lizzie Barminski each scored a goal and an assist for the Gophers, who saw their lone second half goal scored by Annie Carter. Emily Jewell picked up an assist on the game's final tally.

Wells backstop Sydney Line (Northport, N.Y.) was forced to make 14 saves, falling one short of tying a career-high mark. Goucher used a triumvirate of goalkeepers including Demie Huffman, Taylor Striar and Liz Zengel. Huffman started the game for the Gophers but was pulled once the team established a 3-0 lead. In relief, Striar allowed two quick goals to the Express. Goucher backstops did not make a save on either shot on net that they faced.

The Express continue their five-game road trip on Wednesday, facing-off against the Highlanders of Houghton College in a 7:00 p.m. contest under the lights.
