Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker To Nazareth, 2-1

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Wells College field hockey team allowed a goal with only 72 seconds left in regulation, lifting the host Golden Flyers of Nazareth College to a 2-1 victory on Wednesday. The loss drops Wells to 0-5 on the season while Nazareth improves to 3-2 on the year.

Trailing by a 1-0 margin, the Express saw a goal from freshman Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) only 10:22 into the second half to tie the score. Battling heavy crease traffic, Wells was able to sneak through a scrum in front of Nazareth backstop Shannon Winney for the equalizer. The goal came shortly after a first half where Wells was outshot by a 10-to-1 margin through the first 35 minutes of action.

Maggie Namy was responsible for both of Nazareth's goals as she tapped home a right-to-left cross in front of the Express goal mouth with only 1:12 left on the clock. Her first goal of the contest came only 4:14 into the tilt as she forced home a rebound off the pads of Express goalkeeper Sydney Line (Northport, N.Y.).

Line drew the tough-luck loss, halting 11-of-13 shots on goal that she faced. Winney allowed one goal on five shots to earn the win for Nazareth.

The Express welcome a tough non-conference opponent to Aurora on Saturday as they host St. Lawrence in a 2 p.m. contest at the Athletic Association Field.
