Field Hockey Edged By Bryn Mawr In Shoot-out, 4-3

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Despite a two-goal comeback by the Express to force overtime, the Wells College field hockey team posted a 4-3 loss to the Owls of Bryn Mawr College on Sunday. Wells (0-7) remains winless on the season while Bryn Mawr improves to 2-1.

Trailing by a 3-1 margin after the opening 35 minutes of play, Wells tallied two second half goals to tie the game. The game-tying goal came off the stick of freshman Nicole Sales (Woodbury, Conn.), who picked up her second marker of the season on the play. Following a timeout called by Bryn Mawr, the ball was put into play and immediately intercepted by senior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.). The offensive pressure forced Bryn Mawr into allowing a penalty corner, setting up Sales' heroics.

In the two overtime periods, Wells appeared to hold the majority of the possession and ultimately outshot the hosts by an 11-to-7 margin. Despite also holding a 5-to-4 edge in penalty corners, the Bryn Mawr goalkeeper, Alex Weinfeld, made a whopping nine saves during that timeframe to keep her team in the contest.

After 100 minutes of play, both teams utilized a shoot-out to determine a winner. Wells saw goals from sophomore Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) and Sales, but ultimately Bryn Mawr was able to outscore the Express by a 3-to-2 margin to capture the victory.

Mikah Farbo and Ashley Arbuckle opened the scoring for Bryn Mawr, granting the hosts an early 2-0 lead through the first 20:59. Junior Cat Taylor (Jackson, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the day for Wells at 25:15, firing home a rebound after an Express penalty corner, to cut into the deficit. Arbuckle struck again, blasting an unopposed shot past Wells backstop Sydney Line (Northport, N.Y.) at 31:56 to create a 3-1 advantage for the Owls.

Freshman Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) tipped home a cross from Fargnoli only 6:45 into the second half, shrinking the deficit to 3-2 before Sales was able to score the tying goal.

Line drew the tough-luck loss, halting 11-of-14 shots on net that she faced before allowing three goals on five strokes in the shoot-out. Weinfeld turned aside 15-of-18 total shots on net for Bryn Mawr before stopping three Wells shooters in the shoot-out.

Wells returns home this Tuesday, Sept. 16 as they host Elmira in a 4:30 p.m. contest at the Athletic Association Field.
