AURORA, N.Y. – Despite outshooting their opponent on the afternoon, the Wells College field hockey team posted a 2-0 loss to the College at Brockport on Wednesday at the Athletic Association Field. The win boosts Brockport to 4-12 overall on the season while Wells drops to 0-14 on the year.
The Express opened play with an excellent scoring chance at 3:21 as a shot by freshman Nicole Sales (Woodbury, Conn.) was stopped with an unbelievable stick save by Brockport goalkeeper Lindsay Farrell. Despite heavy offensive pressure in the early stages of the contest from Wells, Kaitlin Croghan scored her first career goal for the Golden Eagles at 21:47 to grant her team the 1-0 score.
Less than a minute later, Margo Tremaine was issued a penalty stroke after carrying the ball up field and eluding several Wells defenders. The last defender, however, impeded her progress toward the goal and the official awarded her the free stroke. Tremaine fired a blast on net that was halted by Wells goalkeeper Kendrick Wilson (Collins, N.Y.) for the save.
Wells had a chance to tie the game only 4:48 into the second half, but an Express penalty stroke was turned aside by Farrell to keep the hosts off the board. Emilee Boddery's second goal of the season placed Brockport up by a 2-0 margin at 61:06 as she tipped home Katherine Weyant's blast from the top of the circle to place the Golden Eagles up 2-0.
Wilson earned the loss for Wells despite making six saves. Farrell picked up the shutout, turning aside all eight shots on net. The Golden Eagles also made a defensive save in the contest. Cumulatively, Wells outshot Brockport by a 12-to-11 margin and held the decisive 10-to-7 advantage in penalty corners.
The Express wrap up their 39th season as a varsity program next weekend as they host Ferrum College in back-to-back home games. The Express play Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. before concluding their season on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. Wells will honor their lone senior, Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.), prior to Sunday's contest.
