AURORA, N.Y. – Sparked by two goals from senior Marina Fargnoli (Apalachin, N.Y.) and freshman Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.), the Wells College field hockey team picked up a 5-0 shutout victory over Ferrum College on Sunday at the Athletic Association Field. The Express pick up their first win of the year, moving to 1-15 overall on the year, while Ferrum dips to 2-15 on the season.

With 13 total points of offense against Ferrum, the Express posted their second-best statistical offensive performance dating back to at least the 2008 season. Last season, Wells had 20 points of offense against Bay Path on Sept. 28, 2013. As a team, the Express concluded their 39th season as a varsity program with the fourth-most goals scored (21) dating back to the 1986 season, the year Wells joined the NCAA.

Wells struck for back-to-back goals, scoring her fourth goal of the season at 26:52 off of a pass from junior Cat Taylor (Jackson, N.J.). Her fifth goal of the year was set up by Fargnoli, who sent a pass from right to left that was redirected home by Wells for the strike. She concludes her freshman season as the team's leader in goals scored by a first year player.

Fargnoli then scored the game's next two goals off of rebounds to increase the lead to 4-0. Honored in a pre-game ceremony, Fargnoli concludes her field hockey career at Wells ranked fifth all-time in career point scoring in the NCAA Division III era, tallying 10 goals and 10 assists for 30 points (10-10=30).

Taylor rounded out the scoring at 63:21 for the Express, striking for her second goal of the year after a penalty corner. Sophomore Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) earned an assist on the play.

The Express defense limited Ferrum to only three shots on the afternoon and held the decisive advantage in penalty corners, 16-to-3. Offensively, the Express fired 21 total shots toward the Ferrum goalkeeper, placing 10 on net.

Wells goalkeeper Kendrick Wilson (Collins, N.Y.) picked up her first collegiate victory, turning aside all two shots that she faced in the contest. Courtney Gosslin allowed five goals on 10 total shots for Ferrum, drawing the loss.

Today's victory also marked the first collegiate win for Head Coach Kat Heterbring, who joined the Express shortly before the 2014 season began.
