Field Hockey Upended By St. Lawrence, 4-1

CANTON, N.Y. – Junior Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) tipped in a pass from senior Cat Taylor (Jackson, N.J.) for the lone Express goal as the Wells College field hockey team posted a 4-1 loss to St. Lawrence on Sunday at the North Country Field. Wells (2-3) snaps a two-game winning streak with the result while St. Lawrence evens its overall record at 2-2.

Trailing 4-0 in the game's 61st minute, Stokes tipped home a long left-to-right strike from Taylor off of a penalty corner for their team's lone goal of the afternoon. Collectively, St. Lawrence outshot the Express by a 28-to-10 margin and held the decisive edge in penalty corners, 22-to-7.

Kara Pelosi scored the first two goals of the game at 8:09 and 23:28, respectively, to help the Saints in the early minutes. Off of a penalty corner, Caroline Phinney opened up the second half by firing home a long-range shot at 39:00 before Bailey Sherwin tipped home a Molly Wood shot at 42:31 to give the hosts a commanding 4-0 lead.

Wells goalkeeper Sydney Line allowed four goals on 16 total shots faced in the loss, her first in four games played. Kim Haab earned the win, making four saves on only five Wells shots placed on frame.

The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 19 as they face-off against Marywood in a 6 p.m. showdown.
