Field Hockey Competes On Breast Cancer Awareness Day

AURORA, N.Y. – Despite a 10-to-6 advantage in shots taken, the Wells College field hockey team wrapped up its home slate of matches on Sunday with a 1-0 loss to Hartwick College on Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Wells falls to 4-10 overall on the year with the result while the visiting Hawks move to 5-9 on the season.

In a pregame ceremony, Jennifer Cromp and Cindy Fitzgerald, the mothers of freshman Ivy Cromp (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and senior Chandler Fitzgerald (Weedsport, N.Y.), respectively, were recognized for not only surviving breast cancer, but their unwavering support of their daughters' field hockey careers despite undergoing treatment.

Wells wore pink jerseys during the game and the visiting Hawks supported the event by wearing pink socks. Fans in attendance graciously donated to the cause and, along with the team's contribution, the proceeds will be handed over to a breast cancer foundation.

Sarah Ryan scored the game-winning goal for Hartwick at 9:26, putting back a rebound off the goalie's left pad. The Hawks scored on only their third shot of the game, but the Wells defense allowed only four shots in the final 60:34 of play.

Wells came close to tying the game several times down the stretch, getting behind the Hartwick goalkeeper on one occasion before later ringing the right post on a long-distance shot attempt. Hartwick goalkeeper Shannon Carter stood tall, however, turning aside all six shots on goal for the victory.

Express goalkeeper Kendrick Wilson (Collins, N.Y.) allowed one goal on three shots, making two saves in the loss.

Today's game was the first between Wells and Hartwick since Sept. 13, 1994, a 7-0 victory for the Hawks at the Athletic Association Field.

The Express return to action Wednesday, Oct. 28 as they face-off against Elmira on the road at 3:30 p.m.
