Late Goal By Elmira Upends Field Hockey, 2-1

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Wells College field hockey team posted a heartbreaking loss on Wednesday to Elmira College, falling by a 2-1 margin. The Express fall to 4-11 overall while Elmira moves to 5-11 on the year.

After allowing a goal to Elmira's Alli Gilbert in the opening three minutes of play, Wells dramatically tied the game at one after sophomore Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season with 5:13 remaining in regulation time. The tying goal was set up by junior Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.), who picked up her team-leading 12th point of the season offensively (5-2=12).

The Soaring Eagles quickly called a timeout and used it to their advantage as Atu Machika scored the game-winning goal only 55 seconds after to send the Express home with a 2-1 loss, their sixth of the season in games decided by one goal.

Wells goalkeeper Sydney Line (Northport, N.Y.) picked up the loss after allowing two goals on nine shots faced. Elmira backstop Julie Hockenberger allowed one goal on six shots, picking up the victory.

The Express will look to shake off the tough loss heading into the NEAC Championship Game, scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 31 against the host Phoenix of Wilson College at 1 p.m.
