Wells field hockey falls in thriller against St. Lawrence

The Wells College field hockey team returned home to the Wells Turf Athletic Field after three straight road games and fell 5-3 in a back-and-forth contest against St. Lawrence University on Saturday, Sept. 10. The Express scored the first goal of the game, then trailed 3-1. Wells scored twice in the second half to tie the match at 3-3, but the Saints scored the game's final two goals to earn the win. St. Lawrence improved its record to 3-1 on the year and Wells is 1-4. The Express return to action Monday afternoon at Oswego State.

Wells took the lead just 2:40 into the first half on a goal from Ivy Cromp, her first goal of the season, assisted by Kate Wells. St. Lawrence tied the game in the 11th minute following an attacking play off of a penalty corner. The Saints added two more goals before halftime, scored by Maggie White and Camille Burger.

The Express rallied back in the early part of the second half. Kelly Mason scored on an assist from Kate Wells in the 39th minute, and then Cromp scored her second of the game by deflecting a shot from Mason on a penalty corner. That goal came in the 42nd minute.

St. Lawrence went back ahead, scoring off of a penalty corner while also playing with a personnel advantage as a Wells player served a yellow card. The Saints scored an insurance goal with 5:02 remaining in the second half to account for the final margin.

Wells starting goalkeeper Sydney Line made one save in 26 minutes of action. Kelsey Kokosa came in and made seven saves over the duration of the contest. Rebecca Kroll had a defensive save for Wells.

St. Lawrence had a 21-8 advantage in shots and a 16-4 margin in penalty corners.
