Field Hockey Team Earns Shootout Victory Over Bryn Mawr

The Wells College field hockey team earned its way back into the win column with a 3-2 win in a shootout against visiting Bryn Mawr College on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Wells Turf Field. Wells is 2-5 on the year and Bryn Mawr is 0-5.

The Express took leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but Bryn Mawr tied the game with less than one minute remaining in the second half. After 30 minutes of overtime, the game was decided via shootout, during which Wells converted three of its four attempts, and Bryn Mawr scored on just one of its four shots against Wells goalkeeper Kelsey Kokosa.

In the first half, Wells midfielder Kelly Mason carried the ball into the circle and fired in a low shot to give the Express the advantage in the 16th minute. The goal marked the sixth time in seven games this season that Wells has scored the first goal of the game. Wells led 1-0 at halftime.

Bryn Mawr scored early in the second half to tie the score, but the Express went back ahead on a well-worked goal off of a penalty corner. After the ball was inserted to the left side of the circle, Shianne Stokes sent a hard pass across the face of the goal to the right post, where Kate Wells scored from close range.

The visiting Owls scored the game-tying goal with 58 seconds left in the second half.

Over the two 15-minute overtime sessions, each team had eight shots but neither managed to get one past the opposing goalkeeper.

When the game went to shootout procedure, Bryn Mawr was unsuccessful on its first two attempts while Wells successfully converted on shots from Nicole Sales and Ivy Cromp. The third Bryn Mawr shooter scored, and Wells missed. In the fourth round, Bryn Mawr missed again, and then Wells' Shianne Stokes scored to seal the victory.

It was the second all-time meeting between Wells and Bryn Mawr, and similarly to the previous match in the 2014 season, this also went to a shootout after no winner was determined over 70 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime. In the 2014 game, Bryn Mawr won the shootout and earned the victory.

Wells hosts Marywood at noon Sunday.
