Overtime winner keeps Wells field hockey undefeated in NEAC

The Wells College field hockey team remained undefeated in North Eastern Athletic Conference action with an exciting 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Wilson College on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Wells Turf Field. Wells is 4-8 overall and 2-0 in the NEAC. Wilson is 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The game-winning goal was scored by Kelly Mason and assisted by Shianne Stokes and it came 5:37 into the overtime period. Following a shot by Wilson, Wells worked the ball up the right side of the field, and Stokes had possession. She made a pass from near the right sideline across the Wilson defenders and found Mason wide open in front of the cage. She settled the ball and shot it past the on-rushing goalkeeper for the goal.

It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Mason, and the team-high fourth assist of the year for Stokes. Mason, the current NEAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week, has scored in three of the last four games for Wells. It was the second week in a row that her goal proved to be the only goal of the game in a conference victory. She scored in a 1-0 win for the Express at Morrisville on Sept. 24.

The Express had an 8-4 advantage in shots in the scoreless first half. Wells had strong early pressure to start the second half and back-to-back shots from Kate Wells and Logan Vincent were stopped by Wilson goalkeeper Kayla Butts.

Wells had another quality scoring chance three minutes into the overtime period, but a bouncing shot from Stokes was cleared away from the line by Wilson defender Megan Sterling.

Kelsey Kokosa earned the win in goal with four saves. Kayla Butts had nine saves for Wilson. Wells held a 21-11 advantage in shots and a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners in the match.

Saturday's game was a rematch of the 2015 NEAC field hockey championship game, also won by Wells by a 1-0 score.

Wells next plays Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Brockport.
