Castleton Defeats Wells Field Hockey

The Wells College field hockey team hosted Castleton University and the visiting Spartans claimed a 9-2 victory on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at the Wells Turf Field. Wells hosted its Pink Game, in support of those affected by breast cancer.

Castleton scored the first three goals of the game, but Wells came on strong in the late stages of the first half. Mollie Walts scored on an assist from Whitney Coleman in the 17th minute to get Wells on the board. Castleton added its fourth goal, then Wells scored again as the Express moved up field on a fast break. Walts had an initial shot that was saved, but Kelly Mason collected the rebound and shot to the left post where Coleman tipped in the goal.

Castleton led 5-2 at halftime and scored four more goals in the second half.

Wells goalkeeper Allison Solomon made eight saves. Katherine Pryor and Whitney Coleman each made one defensive save. Earlier Tuesday afternoon, the North Eastern Athletic Conference announced Solomon as the conference's Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 1, 2017.

Wells plays its next three games on the road, beginning with a NEAC matchup Saturday, Oct. 7 at Keuka at 11 a.m.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The goal of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure.

At Tuesday's game, Wells wore pink jerseys to show support and recognize those affected by breast cancer. The team has pledged a donation and accepted donations from fans during the game. All proceeds will be donated to the Cancer Resource Center of the Finger Lakes later this month.
