MAYEN LEADS EXPRESS PAST ALFRED

ALFRED, N.Y. – Four different players scored in double-figures as the Wells College men's basketball team rolled to a 78-68 victory over the Alfred University Saxons Wednesday night in Alfred. Sophomore Mabior Mayen (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished the night a perfect 11 of 11 from the field for 26 points to lead the Express. With the victory Wells improves to 2-4 on the season while the Saxons fall to 3-2.

Terry Harrison (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists; Dave Foltz (Auburn, N.Y.) added 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists; and Luke Thomas (Kernersville, N.C.) finished with 17 points, including 5-11 from the behind the arc to lead the scoring for Wells.

Mike Branche paced the Saxons with 13 points, while teammates Pat Hollenbeck and Sean Curran each chipped in with 11 points.

It was a back and forth game through the first five minutes of play but, with the game tied at 14-14 the Saxons began to pull away, opening up a 12 point lead (37-25) with less than five minutes to play in the half. Despite the deficit the Express finished strong trimming the lead to seven 41-34 at the break.

Wells opened the second half with a lay-up from Mayen and a 3-pointer from Foltz and it was all Express from there, outscoring Alfred 20-6 over the first ten minutes of play to flip the first half deficit and take their own seven point lead.  A dunk from Harrison and a three from Thomas moments later gave the Express a 14 point lead with less than five minutes to play as they would go on to earn their second straight victory.

Wells finished 46 percent from the line and hit 15 of 25 from the charity stripe. Alfred controlled the boards holding a 47-40 advantage but committed 19 turnovers and shot just 29 percent from the field in the second half.

The Express return to action on Wednesday, December 7 when they travel to take on North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opponent Cazenovia College at 6 p.m. in Cazenovia.
