SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior guard Matt Grossbard (Pearl River, NY) scored a game high 28 points and center Pat Flanagan had 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead Roger Williams (5-4) to a 66-59 over Wells College (4-6) in the consolation game of the Sig Makofski Tournament at the Viniar Athletic Center on the campus of Union College.
Wells forward Terry Harrison (Brooklyn, NY) led the Express with 19 points and added 10 rebounds, while senior guard Dave Foltz (Auburn, NY) added 14 points. Roger Williams shot 49 percent from the field (25-for-51) and held Wells to just 21.2 percent (7-for-33) shooting in the second half to take control of the game. Roger Williams, which trailed 34-32 after the first 20 minutes of play, rallied from an early deficit to take the lead for good early in the second half. Grossbard's layup on RWU's first possession of the second half tied the game, and Flanagan followed with a short jumper with 18:00 left in the half on the Hawks next possession, giving Roger Williams a 36-34 lead. The teams traded baskets, with four ties over the next 6:24 until a pair of free throws by Matt Clifford and Grossbard on consecutive possessions put the Hawks ahead 47-43 with 10:47 to play in the second half. The Hawks extended their lead to nine on a spin move by center Pat Flanagan (Somerville, MA) followed by a Grossbard jumper. A steal and layup by Mike Igoe (Lexington, MA) gave Roger Williams its first double digit lead of the game at 55-44 with 7:31 remaining in the second half. Wells would get no closer than five points the rest of the way. In the first half, Wells used a 14-6 run midway through the first half to take an eight point lead at 28-20 with 4:55 to play in the opening 20 minutes. But a high-arching lay-up and three pointer by Grossbard on consecutive possessions cut the lead to three. With 2:38 left in the half, Grossbard finished a fast break layup to pull Roger Williams within one. But three pointers on consecutive possessions by Wells guards Mike DiCampli (Geneva, NY) and Dave Foltz (Auburn, NY) helped the Express maintain a two-point lead at the break. The Express return to action on Friday when they welcome NEAC opponent Lancaster Bible College to campus for an 4 p.m. tip-off.
