Team Three-Point Record Falls In Win Over Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Wells College men's basketball team bombed a team-record 19 three-point baskets on Saturday, elevating the Express to an 85-59 victory over Penn College. Wells improves to 10-12 overall on the year and to 8-7 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference while the host Wildcats drop to 3-17 and to 3-11 against the league.

With 19 field goals from distance, the Express shattered the previous record of 13 set against the SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Jan. 10, 2010. As an individual, junior Chris Courtney (Auburn, N.Y.) fell one three-point short of the single game program record, converting 8-of-12 shots from distance en route to a team-leading 26 points.

Freshman Rich Ross (Bronx, N.Y.) was responsible for 16 of his team's points, picking up a double-double with 12 rebounds, and pouring home four three-point baskets and chipping in a team-leading six assists. Junior Vaughndell Brantley (Syracuse, N.Y.) picked up 14 points and four rebounds to round out the double-digit point scorers for the Express.

Freshman David Dames (Manhattan, N.Y.) filled the stat sheet in only 18 minutes of action off the bench, scoring seven points while hauling in six rebounds. He also led his team with four blocks and tied for the team lead with two steals.

After a scoreless minute of action, senior Jordan Bishop (Arlington, Texas) broke the deadlock with a trey only 1:07 into the contest to give his team a 3-0 lead. Wells opened up a 10-point lead with only 9:21 into the contest as Courtney's third three-pointer of the game created a 21-11 lead.

The Wildcats scored the first five points of the second half, but an 18-2 scoring run by Wells created a 66-36 lead with 13:36 remaining in regulation time. The Express would lead by a game-high 37 point lead with 10:41 to go as a Courtney fastbreak layup put his team up 76-41. Penn College would outscore the Express by a 20-to-9 margin throughout the remaining 10-plus minutes, but Wells created too high of a margin to allow a comeback to take place.

Thomas Ross scored 22 points for Penn College with Kevin Laurence-El finishing with 18 of his own. Ross also chipped in with nine rebounds while Marquis Delgado and Joseph Mangiero each dished out three assists.

Wells will return to action Friday, Feb. 19 as it hosts SUNY Cobleskill at 5 p.m. in a key NEAC contest.
