Men's Basketball Beats Buzzer and SUNY Poly

The Wells College men's basketball team remained undefeated in conference action with a 66-64 win at SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, Dec. 3. Rich Ross made a game-winning 3-pointer with seven seconds left to put the Express in front, and SUNY Poly turned the ball over on the final possession of the game.

Wells is 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference. SUNY Poly is 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in the NEAC.

The back-and-forth contest included 11 ties and eight lead changes. Wells trailed for most of the second half, until a 3-pointer from Chris Courtney tied the game 55-55 with five minutes remaining. SUNY Poly regained the lead and it grew to three points with less than two minutes remaining. A 3-pointer from Ross tied the score 60-60, and then Courtney followed with another three to put Wells ahead 63-60 with 45 seconds remaining.

A layup and two free throws from SUNY Poly gave the Wildcats a one-point lead, and Ross nailed the game-winning shot in the closing seconds.

Ross led Wells with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Courtney and Vaughndell Brantley scored 11 points each. David Dames came off the bench to score nine points, a career-high, and recorded three blocked shots.

The Express turned the ball over just five times in the game, and forced 16 turnovers from SUNY Poly. Wells was 12-for-19 at the free-throw line and the Express made eight 3-pointers in the game.

Wells will continue NEAC play Sunday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. at SUNY Cobleskill.
